SI2 (Sonic Inertia Duo) is a percussion duo comprised of percussionists, composers, and multi-spectral artists Matthew Coley and Cory Hills. Together, they bring an innate range of abilities to the stage with contemporary and transcribed percussion works, movement, spoken word, improvisation, and more. In addition, Coley and Hills fuse elements of world and folk music with elements of western classical music through the use of instruments such as the zarb, udu, and hammer dulcimer, and countless other world percussion instruments. As a result, SI2 creates a unique sonic landscape weaving traditional melodies with complex rhythmic structures. SI2 has performed in unique venues across The United States, and made their European concert debut in September 2009 as featured artists at the Days of New Music International Festival in Chisinau, Moldova.

Coley and Hills espouse the view that percussion is limitless, and as a result, their concerts attempt to showcase the endless sounds of percussion. Pieces range from the old (Philidor brother's March for Kettledrums from 1682), to the recent (Octabones by Adi Morag), to the new (Hills composed Tenacity in 2009), and to the future (consortium commission project for a duo piece by Martin Bresnick and a duo piece for choreographed percussionists by Angelo Sturiale). SI2 has presented master classes at numerous universities throughout the United States and Europe. Future engagements include a concert tour of Romanian, Moldova, Ukraine, Mexico, and the Midwest of The United States. SI2's debut CD plans to be released in 2011.

Outreach is an important part of SI2’s mission.  All of their concerts are planned and programed with all kinds audiences in mind.  SI2 is committed to exploring the unexplored but only in ways that will connect with the most people.  Children always enjoy their concerts and presentations.  Not only do they get exposed to new music, sounds, and creative voyages, but they also get several chances to experience playing on some of the instruments that make up the arsenal SI2 performs on.  Q and A sessions are often planned as part of an SI2 concert.

SI2 loves to perform concerts in strange venues/spaces.  A concert hall, or even an art gallery is wonderful for performances, but SI2 has no problem and in some cases would prefer a warehouse, a town square, under a bridge, or a roof top for a performance as well.  SI2 is steadfast in their exploration and boundary pushing, and hopes that their audiences can savor this passion with them.
