Launching into a bold new direction, Torque (formerly named SI5) performs progressive chamber music with a decidedly different vibe. This music redefines the role of chamber music by infusing classical forms and techniques with the edge and authenticity found in the music of America's night clubs, bars and ipod playlists. The music excites the listener with the engaging harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of America's popular music scene yet is not afraid to break boundaries and dive into the unknown.

Torque is comprised of five dedicated musicians with professional backgrounds in classical music and one behind the scenes compose and arranger. They have developed a unique sound that meets somewhere in the intersection of styles between psychedelic art rock, jazz, commercial, classical and cinematic. They have developed an extensive repertoire combining fresh and sophisticated arrangements and exhilarating originals.  Their passionate playing coaxes a dizzying array of colors from a base quintet comprised of vibraphone, piano, hammer dulcimer, cello, and clarinet augmented by folk and ethnic drumming.

An evening with the Torque is to experience music innovative and relevant, as well as beautiful and visionary.  Keep an eye out for Torque all summer at
Uncommon Ground Devon, as well as their fall concert and CD release. Torque is made up of Matthew Coley on hammer dulcimer and percussion, Mary Drews on piano, Renee Keller on vibraphone, Todd nickow on clarinet, Russ Rolen on cello, and Bjorn Berkhout as composer and arranger.
